NUCLEAR EMPLOYERS URGED TO ACCESS £50M FUND FOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The Government and Cogent Sector Skills Council is making £50m available for the strategically important employers in the national skills council’s vital science using sector. The fund is part of a three year deal and will be available from 1st January 2009. Cogent research shows that the current inflow of people via apprenticeships and vocational routes is insufficient to meet replacement demand in core processing and technician roles across the whole Cogent Sector.Cogent CEO Joanna Woolf said:

“Action on skills is needed now: these are the vital and strategic industries that keep our lights on, provide the fuel for our transport, workplace and homes, the product-enhancing additives found in everything around us as well as curing diseases and saving lives.”
Through this £50m Training Fund, Cogent will focus the support and funding available through Train to Gain to take action against the priorities set out in the industry’s Nuclear Sector Skills Agreement, including meeting challenging targets for training new entrants and qualifying existing workers. It is aimed at the specific skills needs of the science-using Cogent Sector and a range of value-adding. Importantly, The National Skills Academy for Nuclear will also work with individual employers and the Train to Gain Skills Brokers to assess their needs and identify support through Train to Gain.
